India is adding startups at a breathtaking pace – over 1.59 lakh recognised by DPIIT as of January 2025, up from barely 500 in 2016. By October 31, 2025 this number crossed 1,97,000, meaning roughly 38,000 net additions in just 10 months. A Longhouse–TOI study projects this will double to 2.4 lakh startups by 2030, with millions of jobs created in emerging sectors.
BUT everything is not rosy. As of October 2025, 6,385 DPIIT-recognised startups already stand categorised as closed in MCA records, with Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi leading shutdowns. Across the broader ecosystem, more than 28,000 startups shut in 2023–24 alone, and nearly 40,000 have closed between Jan-2023 and Oct-2025. Research consistently warns that around 90% of Indian startups fail within the first TWO years.
